Building Description |
Millennium Tower is a 9-storey apartment style building which opened in 2004. Exterior Access: the building is wheel-chair accessible. |
Building Amenity Space |
Main floor has a media/games room, dining room and outdoor patio with resident garden. There is a secondary patio on the second floor which is accessible through the reading room. A multi-purpose room has a full kitchen in the event residents want to host a dinner. Coin operated washers and dryers. Non-denominational chapel. Also available are hairdressing services (weekly), foot care (monthly). Indoor secured scooter storage. |
Language, Culture or Religious Affiliation |
Staff speak English, Tagalog, Polish, French, Cantonese, Mandarin and Russian. The building is owned by Columbus Charities and there are Catholic images in some common areas. However, religious affiliation is not a criterion for residency. |
Type of Accommodation |
There are 47 subsidized assisted living units and 50 non-subsidized independent living units (access to these units is through Columbus Charities Association). All the AL units have the same floor plan and square footage (275 sq.ft.); they are bachelor suites with a bathroom and galley kitchen. The units are not suitable for couples. |
Furnishings |
All units have a fridge, microwave and cook top. Tenants provide the furnishings for their suites. Common areas have comfortable furnishings. |
Cost |
Residents pay 70% of after-tax income. This covers (1) monthly rental accommodation, (2) hospitality services (meals, housekeeping, etc.), (3) personal care, (4) basic cable, (5) heating and electricity. Tenants on income assistance pay a flat rate. Residents also pay a $15 monthly hydro surcharge. Items not included as part of the 70% include: telephone, additional cable, household and toiletry supplies, all medications, personal care supplies, BC Medical (MSP) and insurance. |
Food Service |
Self-serve continental breakfast available from 0600 – 0900. Table service for lunch and dinner. Choice of two entrees available for all meals. Special diets available upon request. Afternoon tea served daily. |
Housekeeping & Laundry |
Included in the monthly rent is weekly laundering of linens and towels (which are supplied by Millennium Tower); as is weekly light cleaning of resident’s suite. Coin operated laundry is available for tenants. |
Social/Recreational Opportunities |
Full-time recreation coordinator offers a variety of programs designed to maintain and/or improve mobility and social interaction. Programs include but are not limited to: exercises, trivia, current events, movie matinees/evenings, bingo, library carts, shuffleboard, and community outings. Recreation programs are open to all residents of the building. Most recreation costs are covered by the rent; bus trips are subsidized by recreation, but residents contribute to the bus’s rental. |
Emergency Response (24) Capacity |
24 hour emergency response is available. Each room has two call bells. One in the bed room area, the other in the bathroom. |
Mobility |
Residents must be able to move around their unit on their own and make their own way to the dining room, with or without mobility aides. |
Pet Policy |
No pets. |
Smoking Policy |
Smoking is prohibited in the building, including tenant suites. Tenants may smoke in the designated areas outside. |
Safety / Security Features |
Smoke detectors in all units and common areas. Main doors are secured at all hours and visitors must ring the tenants for access to the building. Security cameras on main floor. Secured underground parking. |
Visiting |
No restrictions on visiting hours. However, it is requested that noise be kept down after 10:00pm. |
Parking (Tenant/Visitor) |
Resident parking is available for $50 per month. Visitor parking is available at no charge. Regular visitors may lease a parking clicker from Columbus Charities. The $50 fee is fully refundable. |
Neighbourhood / Community Amenities |
Located in the West End, Millennium Tower is close to grocery stores, drug stores, post office, numerous restaurants, and English Bay. It’s on a bus route, which gives easy/quick access to the West End Community Centre, Joe Fortes Library, Stanley Park and Downtown shopping. |
Restrictions |
Building is on a hill. Not suitable for couples due to the size of the units. |
Exit Criteria |
When residents cannot make decisions on their own behalf, require 24-hour professional care or are unable to ambulate independently, they can no longer be accommodated in assisted living. Residents will be supported until alternate arrangements can be made. |
Tour Information |
Tours are available to those who have been pre-authorized by a case manager. Tour times are flexible, but an appointment must be made. |
