Subsidized Assisted living, available through Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH), is intended to be affordable for all people, regardless of income. Residents pay 70% of their after tax income for a full package of services. Residents on BC Benefits or income assistance pay a pre-determined set rate. Those with higher incomes pay only up to a maximum amount based on comparative private services. A case manager can provide you with more details.
To be eligible to receive publicly funded assisted living services, clients must file an income tax return for the appropriate taxation year. Tenant rates are reviewed and adjusted annually based on the after-tax information reported in the previous year. New rates take effect January 1st. If during the year your expenses or income changes significantly, contact your VCH Case Manager.
The monthly client contribution for a unit offered through VCH covers rental accommodation, hospitality services, and personal care services.
Rental Accommodations:
This means a private, lockable apartment or suite that tenants furnish with their own belongings. Typically each suite has its own living/dining areas, a bathroom and kitchenette with a small fridge and stove or microwave. Assisted living residences also have a common dining and social space. Overnight guest suites are available in some buildings.

Items not covered in subsidized units under the monthly tenant contribution may include such things as breakfast supplies, medications, incontinence products, tenant insurance, personal toiletries, personal telephone and television cable services. Other services may be available to be purchased from the Service Provider by the tenant (i.e. hydro, personal laundry, etc). Ask the service provider for a full list of items and related costs that are not part of your monthly contribution.
